The design concept for Taipei's unique "Five City Gates" draws from the ancient story of the city's "Five City Gates." To ease the conflict caused by the Zhangzhou-Quanzhou fighting, Taipei established the Xiaonan Gate, a symbol of peace. Unlike most cities, which have four gates, this ultimately resulted in Taipei's unique "Five City Gates." The "Taipei Design Award" symbolizes opening a door for the designer. By incorporating the imagery of the Chinese character "北" into the symbol, we hope that while appreciating the design, the public will gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of Taipei's unique charm and historical heritage.

The design of the trophy is inspired by the feng shui of Taipei City. When Taipei was built, it was offset 14.3 degrees due to geographical and feng shui considerations. The two lines connecting the city gates were designed to intersect in the direction of Qixing Mountain, Taipei's highest peak. The trophy's shape, based on the Taipei Design Awards logo, extends upward, ultimately converging at the top, symbolizing the designers' tireless efforts and breakthroughs in their pursuit of excellence and innovation.

To alleviate conflicts from the Zhang-Chuan disputes, Taipei uniquely established the peaceful 'Little South Gate', differing from most cities that have four gates, ultimately forming Taipei's distinctive 'Five Gates'. This symbolizes the 'Taipei Design Award' opening a door for designers. Integrating the imagery of 'north' into the symbol, it hopes to deepen the appreciation and understanding of Taipei's unique charm and historical essence.
